The Mariinsky Ballet returns to the Royal Opera House with the Mariinsky Orchestra for another exciting three-week season of spectacular ballets presented by Victor Hochhauser.
We are delighted once again, to offer members of the Victor Hochhauser Mailing List a priority booking period for the Mariinsky Ballet, who will be performing at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, from Monday 24 July – Saturday 12 August 2017. This exciting three-week season opens with the Mariinsky’s unique version of Petipa and Gorsky’s exuberant classic, Don Quixote. The season continues with their unforgettable Swan Lake, based on Petipa and Ivanov’s timeless masterpiece. Alexei Ratmansky’s acclaimed staging of Tolstoy’s epic novel Anna Karenina, set to a powerful score by Rodion Shchedrin, returns after its stunning success at the Royal Opera House six years ago.
The triple bill, appropriately entitled CONTRASTS, features Alberto Alonso’s sensual Carmen Suite, the Royal Ballet’s Resident Choreographer, Wayne McGregor’s bewitching Infra and an incredibly beautiful restaging of Petipa’s famous Grand Pas from Paquita with the whole company.
The season concludes in grand style with Petipa’s lavish melodrama of love, betrayal and ultimate redemption, La Bayadère, where scenes of exotic spectacle culminate in the choreographic glory of the ‘Kingdom of the Shades’, showing the Mariinsky’s famed corps de ballet in its superlative beauty.

The season opens with the Mariinsky Ballet’s sparkling production of Petipa and Gorsky’s exuberant classic, Don Quixote. Set in romantic Spain, the plot unfolds as the love between Kitri and Basil is challenged by the fruitless attempts of Kitri’s father to engineer his unwilling daughter into a more lucrative match. The excitement, colour and wit of Cervantes’ masterpiece are a perfect vehicle for the brilliance of the Mariinsky dancers, whose astounding displays of dazzling choreography and virtuoso dancing are highlighted by Minkus’ irresistible music.

Alexei Ratmansky’s acclaimed staging of Tolstoy’s epic novel Anna Karenina returns after its stunning success six years ago at the Royal Opera House. Tolstoy’s magnificent portrayal of a tormented woman who breaks all moral and social conventions with devastating consequences is set to a powerful score by Rodion Shchedrin. The ballet’s extraordinary heroine is the perfect vehicle for the unparalleled dramatic and expressive gifts of the Mariinsky’s great ballerinas.

‘Contrasts’ offers three mesmerising and sensational Mariinsky productions. Alberto Alonso’s sensual ballet, Carmen Suite, is set to Rodion Shchedrin’s imaginative recreation of Bizet’s colourful opera. The Mariinsky’s magnificent dancers convey the shimmering emotional complexity of renowned British choreographer Wayne McGregor’s bewitching Infra to perfection and Spanish passion and excitement return in a thrilling restaging of Petipa’s famous Grand Pas from Paquita, to conclude a programme of excitement, grandeur and spectacle.

Set in mythical India, Petipa’s lavish melodrama of love, betrayal and ultimate redemption tells the tale of the temple dancer Nikiya’s doomed love for the warrior Solor. Scenes of exotic spectacle culminate in the choreographic glory of the ‘Kingdom of the Shades’, one of the greatest treasures in the company’s repertoire. The Mariinsky’s matchless soloists and exquisite corps de ballet combine to bring an experience which captures the soul with its magnificence, poignancy and excitement.
